An update and change to r/formula1

Hello everyone

Earlier today, we had a meeting with Reddit representatives to discuss our protest and the future of r/formula1.

We entered the meeting with a number of requests for Reddit, centered around Reddit’s lack of accessibility features and Reddit CEO Steve Huffman’s behaviour before and during the protest.

While no concrete concessions were made during the meeting, Reddit representatives have promised us responses to our requests and concerns.

We are also not blind to the groups of users who wish to return to r/formula1 and enjoy talking about the sport with the rest of the community.

As a result, we are planning to reopen r/formula1 tomorrow, Tuesday, June 20th, albeit with one major change.

As Reddit has stated NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content being one of the issues prompting changes to the platform terms, we will change the classification of r/formula1 to NSFW, in order to comply to the fullest extent of our abilities with these changes.

Why are we switching to NSFW?

Formula 1 is inherently dangerous. Crashes and injuries are not uncommon - some even with fatal results. These incidents are discussed on r/formula1, and videos, images and other media are posted following these events.

Formula 1 includes messaging and sponsors that are connected to alcohol, tobacco and gambling - all of which are legislatively prohibited or age restricted in various locations. We cannot prevent these from being displayed to underaged users, as they are incorporated in general Formula 1 imagery and content.

Formula 1 is known for, both in the past and today, to include certain risqué imagery that fall within the NSFW space.

Reddit’s User Agreement states that “Children under the age of 13 are not allowed to create an Account or otherwise use the Services.” - As such it stands to reason that persons under legal age participate in r/formula1.

Switching our classification means Reddit’s age verification shields underage users from being exposed to content considered harmful.
